Reagan redux? Really? Obama silences Voice of America broadcasts to Chinese dissidents

Unbelievable. President Obama — who some are determined to cast as a Ronald Reagan Redux — doesn’t feel Chinese dissidents need to hear anything that hasn’t been approved by their communist jailers. So, after 42 years, he’s cutting off short-wave Voice of America broadcasts into Tibet, western Xinjiang Province, and other points beyond bamboo curtain.

The Obama administration will cancel shortwave radio broadcasts by Voice of America into China this year, as Beijing is expanding its propaganda operations in the United States and around the world.

Critics of the broadcasting cuts, announced Monday, said major reductions in staff and shortwave broadcasts will sharply curtail an important outlet for unfiltered news and information for large numbers of people in China, especially areas such as Tibet and western Xinjiang province, where pro-democracy forces are opposing Chinese rule.

“This is another alarming sign that America is cowering before China‘s gangster regime,” said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, California Republican and member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “The Chinese people are our greatest allies, and the free flow of information is our greatest weapon.”

All this in the same week that Obama nauseatingly referred to himself as “the Gipper” — which, by the way, has to be at least exhibit #1000 for the case that George Orwell possessed an honest-to-goodness crystal ball.

It is puke-worthy when Obama and his press agents in the mainstream media attempt to advance his decidedly anti-Reagan presidency by comparing him with the true Gipper — I suppose if only as a red herring to keep the public from realizing that he’s really Jimmy Carter.

I do know one thing for sure, Obama and his minions are betting that the American people are a powerfully ignorant lot — and it grieves me to say it, but they could be right. Obama did get elected by conning a majority of Americans into believing that he has a magic bottomless bag full of rainbows, hope, and change; and if they voted for him he would outlaw sickness, poverty, long lines at Disneyland; and as an added bonus, their tires would quit wearing out, too.

So now he’s pretending to be a clone of one of our greatest presidents — even while his actions prove the opposite. Reagan was passionate about beaming news from the free world into the darkest crannies of the earth’s political dungeons — and in so doing, he infused hope from his beloved “shining city on a hill” that encouraged and mobilized millions. He invested 6 billion in renovating, upgrading and enhancing “the world’s largest short-wave system” and when the Soviets blocked the signal, he pugnaciously jumped into what Peter Schweizer called another “arms race” — to develop new technology to foil their jamming equipment. Conservapedia:

The third part of the plan was a war of ideas. Reagan recognized that mass communications was the new most important instrument. He used Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, and Radio Marti; bombarding the captive nations with broadcasts, embedding coded messages for the leaders of resistance movements, secretly distributing Korans and pamphlets and that detailed the ongoing Soviet abuse of Muslims. Reagan knew that the struggle against communism was not simply between two political ideologies, but it was fundamentally about core beliefs and values and faith in a higher power. So when he changed the radio stations and made them voices of advocacy, he also added religious programming. Particular the Catholic mass was provided to listeners in Poland and that was a very energizing and mobilizing influence in a country where Catholicism and resistance to communism worked well together. They were also providing information and spiritual food to Muslims in Soviet Central Asia. They were printing brochures and they were having radio programs that talked about the incompatibility between Islam and the forced militant atheism of communism.

And so this week we have more evidence that Obama is a Reagan imposter — working to roll back everything that Reagan fought for, while pretending to be like him. It is an abysmal travesty that couldn’t become more garish if Obama took to wearing one of those creepy Reagan Halloween masks. Why should anyone be surprised that Obama will aid Chinese propogandists by turning off the spigots of truth to their people, when only last month he entertained anti-American Chinese propaganda inside the White House? Why would anyone imagine he cares about the totalitarian police state in China when he vetted and hired a Communications Director, Anita Dunn, who called the Chinese Hitler, Mao Zedong, one of her favorite “philosophers?”

Even before that, I would imagine that the Mao ornament on the White House Christmas tree had a chilling effect on overseas freedom fighters anxiously watching the new White House tenants for signs that they will continue America’s historical tradition of aid and comfort to the oppressed.

Judging by his friends, associates, statements and actions before and after coming to Washington, it should be no suprise that Obama steps over the huddled masses to bring water to their oppressors. Just spare us the whack-adoo Reagan comparisons.
