Apparently University of Illinois students and sports fans can’t chant “USA! USA!” during a military fly-over on the 9th anniversary of September 11th, without being doused in a retaliatory upchuck of America-hating venom straight from the ivory tower. This time the bile came in the form of a letter from the university administrator himself, David Green, who felt that the chanting was, among other things, bellicose, militaristic propaganda.
This is almost as goofy as that California high school principle who disciplined five students for wearing “incendiary” patriotic clothing on a Mexican national holiday. And if you think these are isolated episodes, I envy you your naivete. In reality, it is an epidemic, or at least the side effect of some environmental hazard unique to the academia. Long-term effects of chalk dust entering the nose and building up in the frontal cortex? Fumes from dry erase pens? Long-term cumulative cannabis toxicity? I’m just grasping at straws here — although, in a way, I could sort of see that California principal’s point. If I’m traveling out of the country on the Fourth of July, I always make it a point to riot and break things whenever I see the host country’s flag displayed.
Nevertheless, this academic freedom-phobia boggles my mind. Surely Green and his many commie friends remember the bloody, horrific previous century with its sickening succession of vicious tyrants. How can they bear witness to all that and emerge with the soul-eating hatred for the land of the free and the home of the brave, that Green and many of the others who we pay to shape the minds of our youth possess.
Warner Todd Huston at Stop the ACLU summarized Green’s objections to the patriotic chant:
Green’s vituperation covers the gamut of anti-Americanism: America is “imperialist,” she is unconcerned over the deaths of Muslims, America is”nativist,” and patriots are prone to “obnoxious, fake-macho, chicken-hawk” chants. In other words all that is wrong with the world is evinced in the United States of America.
As if this isn’t enough, however, Huston reminds us that Green, like so many other America-haters, is supported by hardworking taxpayers.
It is infuriating that this man makes his living feeding off the taxpayers of the state of Illinois. According to the CollegiateTimes.com website, Green’s 2009 salary was $36,388 of Illinois tax dollars. This is the sort of anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-western “academic” that infests the American university system from north to south and east to west. These people are living off the taxpayers and spreading their hate every single day.
