Only in California: Welfare dollars dispensed at casino ATMs

Via the LA Times. Welcome to the gritty underworld of grinding poverty in the U.S. There has to be a Grapes of Wrath sequel in this somewhere.

Why in the world would a destitute Californian choose to cash out their monthly welfare stipend at a casino?  Because it’s a convenient stop en route to Costco to stock up on flour, sugar, beans, rice, and hamburger?

One can only dream.

I was raised in California by a cash-strapped single mother, who never requested a dime from the state and was a savant at feeding five on practically nothing. And I’m not talking about take-and-bake pizzas and chicken strips from the Safeway Deli.

That kind of self-reliance is the enemy of statism. That’s why liberals are trying to con taxpayers into believing that jo-jos with ranch dressing are in the top tier of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and therefore a universal human right for all. Your wallet please.

In fact, isn’t that the story behind the famous depression-era photo “Migrant Mother?” That she had to sell the tires of their truck to raise cash for beer, nachos, and lottery tickets?

My husband and I run a non-profit that sends medical teams to developing countries. We are occasionally confronted by surprisingly vociferous critics here at home who feel that we should focus our compassion on the needy within our own borders.

I usually don’t attempt to reason with those laboring under such impaired perspective and insight, but I will make an exception here with two photos:
